The Project

The Putt Hutt at Clarence Pier, Southsea, embarked on a transformative project to enhance its mini golf experience through the installation of neon strip lighting.

Prior to the installation of strip lights, The Putt Hutt featured a typical indoor mini golf setup with a basic lighting scheme that lacked any thematic or ambient lighting, resulting in a straightforward and utilitarian appearance. This setting limited the visual and experiential appeal of the course, particularly during evening hours.

The project brief was aimed at significantly enhancing the visual appeal of The Putt Hutt's course. The goal was to transform the space into a visually captivating setting that would draw players in and create a memorable experience, whilst being easy to maintain.

By introducing a new lighting scheme which provided plenty of vibrant and cheerful ambient light, the project also sought to extend playable hours whilst ensuring the safety and navigability of players.

Challenges

• The type of strip lighting chosen needed to be flexible capable of being implemented into the existing course without significant works or modifications and able to adapt to the curves of the course. Wiring needed to be hidden out of the way to avoid safety hazards.
• The strip lighting needed to be hard wearing, able to withstand being struck by golf balls and potentially golf clubs.
• Maintaining a balance between aesthetic enhancements and functional playability would be crucial, ensuring that the lights enhance rather than distract from the gameplay. Careful selection and placement of luminaires was required to achieve the desired visual effects without causing glare or shadows that could negatively affect the playing experience.
• The control system needed to be manageable by any staff member - uncomplicated and easy to understand. Whilst training could be provided, it was essential that day to day running and creation of scenes would not require a specialist to commission. 

General Lighting Scheme

Luminaires

Installer Anytronics chose to utilise Integral LED's Neon Flex Bendable Strip with Top Bend to achieve the look they required. They installed this alongside their own lighting control systems.

The Neon Flex Bendable Strip offers high quality seamless and dot-free light output, with IP67 ingress protection helping ensure that the lighting stays dust-free for easier cleaning and maintenance in awkward corners. The silicone extrusion provided the flexibility required to work with the curves of the course meaning less cutting and connections during installation.
